Buncombe County Commissioners Expand Employee Protections On the Basis of Sexual Orientationand Gender Identity
ASHEVILLE, NC — The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners gave final approval this afternoon to changes to county personnel rules to prohibit discrimination against workers on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
The measure passed by the same 4-3 margin by which commissioners tentatively approved it on April 2. Democrats David Gantt, Ellen Frost, Holly Jones and Brownie Newman voted “yes” and Republicans Joe Belcher, Mike Fryar and David King voted “no.”
Commissioners did not debate the changes today, although Gantt noted there was extensive discussion at the April 2 meeting.
The move has attracted considerable attention, he said.
“I don’t think that any commissioner has gone out in public without being asked what we think about this,” Gantt said.
